General Properties of Quiescent Novae
نویسنده
چکیده
The observed properties of novae before and after eruption are discussed. The distribution of orbital periods of novae shows a concentration near 3.2 h, which resembles that of magnetic cataclysmic variables, and there is some evidence that many of the novae themselves are magnetic near that orbital period. Desynchronisation of polars by nova eruptions can lead to an estimate (∼ 2×103 y) for the time between eruptions for the strongly magnetic systems; this is much shorter than that found from other methods. The similarity of preand post-nova luminosities, at high rates of mass transfer, is ascribed to irradiation of the secondary producing a self-sustained high Ṁ state. This slows cooling of the white dwarf after eruption, delays the onset of full scale dwarf nova outbursts in most systems, and delays any descent into a hibernation state of low rate of mass transfer.

The Quiescence of Dwarf Novae and X-ray Transients
Our understanding of the structure and properties of accretion disks in quiescent Dwarf Novae and X-ray Transients is very limited. Observations during quiescence challenge some of the standard Disk Instability Model (DIM) predictions. Our ignorance of the nature of viscosity may be the main source of uncertainties in quiescent disk models. A “layered accretion” alternative to the DIM, in which...
متن کاملHot Accretion onto White Dwarfs in Quiescent Dwarf Novae
We present dynamically consistent solutions for hot accretion onto unmagnetized, rotating white dwarfs (WDs) in five quiescent dwarf novae. The measured WD rotation rates (and other system parameters) in RX And, SS Cyg, U Gem, VW Hyi and WZ Sge imply spindown of the WD by an extended hot flow emitting most of its X-rays in the vicinity of the stellar surface. In general, energy advection is abs...
متن کاملX-ray emission from classical and recurrent novae observed with ROSAT
We have analysed 350 pointed and serendipitous observations of 108 different classical and recurrent novae in outburst and in quiescence, contained in the ROSAT archive. One aim was to search for super-soft Xray sources and we found only 3 of them among postnovae. Thus, the super-soft X-ray phase of novae is relatively short lived (up to 10 years) and is observed only for up to 20% of novae. Mo...
متن کاملFaint Cataclysmic Variables in Quiescence: Globular Cluster and Field Surveys
Current evolutionary models imply that most Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) have Porb < 2 hours and are Dwarf Nova (DN) systems that are quiescent most of the time. Observations of nearby quiescent DN find that the UV spectrum is dominated by the hot white dwarf (WD), indicating that it provides a significant fraction of the optical light in addition to the quiescent disk and main sequence companio...
متن کاملRecurrent Nova IM Normae
We detected the second historical outburst of the 1920 nova IM Nor. Accurate astrometry of the outbursting object revealed the true quiescent counterpart having a magnitude of R=17.0 mag and B=18.0 mag. We show that the quiescent counterpart shows a noticeable variation. From the comparison of light curves and spectroscopic signatures, we propose that IM Nor and CI Aql comprise a new class of r...
